Edward Corrie was a farm labourer at Waihao Downs when he joined the army.
He was with the 1st Battalion, Canterbury Infantry Regiment at Bapaume when it joined the attack on August 25. It was hard fighting and, towards the end, the Official History records: "Heavy shelling during the night of September 5th/6th, followed by a very quiet morning, indicated that the enemy was making a further withdrawal."
No further enemy action is recorded for the Canterbury Infantry Regiment on that day, so it is possible that the artillery barrage was the cause of Edward's death.
