49568 Private Harold Cecil McCallum 23/10/1895-12/4/1919.

Northern Cemetery, Dunedin.

Harold McCallum was working in the mines at Waiuta on the west Coast when he volunteered for service at the end of 1916.  He spent time in hospital in France, then in England before being repatriated on the HS "Marama" and entering Dunedin Hospital in January, 1919.  His cause of death is listed as peritonitis and pleurisy.


Personal Notes

The many friends of Corporal Harold McCallum, of Ravepsbourne, Dunedin, who recently arrived in New Zealand by the hospital ship Marama. will regret to learn of his death, which took place at Dunedin on Saturday last. Deceased was about 22 years, and before joining the 30th Reinforcements was assistant surveyor to the Blackwater mines, Waiuta. He was a fine stamp of a young man, being held m the highest of esteem by all those who knew him/ The greatest sympathy is expressed for the parents and relatives in their bereavement.  -Greymouth Evening Star, 14/4/1919.
