"Band Box Joe" - Joseph Mitchell (?)-21/2/1885.

LAKE WAKATIPU.
(from our own correspondent.) Queenstown, February 23.
A sad fatal accident happened at the Invincible mine, Head of the Lake, on Saturday evening last to a miner named Joseph Mitchell, generally known as "Band-box Joe." At the time of the accident the unfortunate man was engaged completing a set of tunnel timbers in the mine and it appears that the false set used was drawn too quickly, thus causing the ground to fall before an escape could be made. Deceased was a young man about 32 years of age, unmarried, and was well known and generally liked in this district.   -Cromwell Argus, 24/2/1885.

INTERPROVINCIAL
QUEENSTOWN, February 24. Yesterday an inquest was held on Joseph Mitchell, a miner, who was killed in the Invincible mine through a set of timber canting over in a tunnel on Saturday night. Deceased died on the road down, near Queenstown, although every effort was made to reach the hospital. Deceased was an experienced miner, and was very well liked. He was insured in the temperance branch with the Government, but he allowed his policy lately to run out. He was insured in Victoria for L600. He was a native of Ballarat, where his mother is in good circumstances.  -Evening Star, 24/2/1885.
