At last night’s meeting of the executive of the Returned Soldiers’ Association three new members were elected, two transfers inwards were received, the resignation of an honorary member was accepted, and one death was recorded. In memory of the deceased ex-soldier (Private Robert Taggart, 3/2208, New Zealand Medical Corps) the members stood in silence for a moment. -Evening Star, 23/9/1925.
Robert Taggart was born in Glasgow and came to New Zealand in 1909. He joined the army in 1916. The notifications of his death conceal an embarrassing truth: Robert died in the Seacliff Asylum. Apart from that detail, there is nothing in his Army record to indicate why he was in the Asylum.
