A miner named Timothy Davis was smothered in the Alpine filling-in shaft on Sunday night. Deceased, who was between 60 and 70 years of age, had been a resident in the Lyell for many years. -West Coast Times, 4/9/1891.
FATAL ACCIDENT.
The "Lyell Times" of Sept. 5th states: — The funeral of the late Mr Timothy Davis, who was accidentally killed in the Alpine mine on the 30th ultimo, took place on Wednesday last, and nearly 300 mourners followed to the cemetery. The Rev W. Hal. Wilson conducted the service in St Matthew's Church and at the grave in an impressive manner. During the service in the Church, Mr Heard, of Reefton, played the "Dead March in Saul." When we say that this was the largest funeral which has taken place in Lyell for many years it shows the respect accorded to the memory of an inoffensive, straightforward, kindhearted man. — At the inquest the jury returned the following verdict: — We, the undersigned jurymen, find that the deceased, Timothy Davis, came to his death accidentally through being smothered in the filling pass of the United Alpine Company's mine, above No. 1 level, on the 30th August, 1891; and we attach the following rider: From the evidence before us, we are of opinion that the accident could have been avoided had there been ordinary appliances; and we further consider that the pass is in a very dangerous state, and that no man should be allowed to work there until the necessary appliances for saving life are provided. -Colonist, 8/9/1891.
