Mr and Mrs C. H. McLean, of Mornington, have just received word of the death from wounds in France of their eldest son, Driver John McLean, 59th Battery R.F.A. Driver McLean left Dunedin for London on July 31, 1915, and joined the regiment stated on his arrival at Home. Prior to leaving New Zealand he was farming in Southland. He was twenty-three years of age. -Lyttelton Times, 13/12/1917.
The story of John McLean has been a research problem. My usual go-to, the "Online Cenotaph," has a John McLean who died on the right date. But his father is in Stornoway, Scotland, not Dunedin. The RFA mention in the newspaper is the Royal Field Artillery, part of the British Army and this might account for the confusion.
