ACCIDENTALLY SHOT.
At the inquest on D. Borne, who was found in a dying condition off the Hawea-Makarora road on Friday last with a gunshot wound in the right breast, a verdict was returned that deceased met his death through the accidental discharge of a shotgun. Borrie loft his home at Maungawera on a bicycle for Makarora with a shotgun slung over his back by a rope lanyard. He was later seen by two public works employees near where he was found apparently intent on a shot at a hare or a rabbit. When discovered later he was lying unconscious nearer the road with the gun under his legs. It is conjectured that the rope which was attached at one end to the trigger guard became entangled in the stunted growth on the hillside, and on the deceased’s endeavouring to free it the gun was accidentally discharged. Mr R. Walker, J.P., acted as coroner, and Mr J. Mackay was foreman of the jury. -Otago Daily Times, 31/10/1930.
