32399 Private Stanley Josiah Smart, (2/3/1894-21/8/1916). "come home to die"

FUNERA L NOTICE. 

THE Friends of MR and MRS G. SMART are respectfully informed that the Funeral of their late son, Private Stanley Joshua Smart, will leave their residence, Waitohi Flat on WEDNESDAY, August 23rd, at 1 p.m. for the Temuka Cemeterv.

The remains of Private Stanley Joshua Smart were yesterday accorded a military burial in the Temuka Cemetery. A large number of friends were present. The service was conducted by the Rev J. Griffin. A firing party, consisting of the Temuka Cadets, fired three volleys over the grave, and the "Last Post" was rounded. Private Smart was a resilient of Waitohi, and at the time of his death was home on sick leave from Trentham.   -Lyttelton Times, 24/8/1916.


The Defence Department advise that Private Stanley Joshua Smart. Eighteenth Reinforcements, died at Waitohi Flat, Temuka, on August 21. The certified cause of death was "septic tonsilitis, toxaemia, and syncope, following influenza."  -Dominion, 25/8/1916.


At the King street Methodist Church. Temuka on Sunday, the Rev. J W. Gritfan held a service in memory of the late Private S. J. Smart. He took for his text Ecclesiastes 3, 20: "All go unto one place; all are of dust, and all turn to dust again." He referred to the upright character of the late Private Smart, and of him doing his duty to his country in volunteering for active service. He had taken ill in camp, and was sent home on sick leave, and when he returned home he said that he had come home to die. He had no fear of death because of the life he had lived. Hymns appropriate to the occasion were sung, and Captain Buist was present with a number of cadets. The church was beautifully decorated by Mrs J. Elder. In the Denmark street Church, in the evening a similar service was held.  -Press, 29/8/1916.


TEMUKA ROAD BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. 

The monthly mooting of the Temuka Road Board was held yesterday. Present — Messrs D. Grant (Chairman), G. McCullough, G. Smart, and A. Guild. An apology was received from Mr J. J. Ellis. A motion of sympathy was passed by the Board with Mr and Mrs G. Smart in their recent sad bereavement (the loss of their son, Stanley Joshua Smart), all members standing. Mr Smart briefly replied thanking the members for their kindness.   -Timaru Herald, 8/9/1916.
