OBITUARY.
DOCTOR TOM PETTEY.
It is with regret that we record the death, which occurred this morning after a very brief illness, of Dr. Tom Pettey, of Ashburton. Late last week Dr. Pettey became seriously ill, and his condition gradually became more critical, the illness culminating as stated shortly after 9 o'clock this morning.
Dr. Pettey was regarded as a skilled practitioner, and had earned considerable distinction locally.
Born near Bournemouth, England, in 1873, Dr. Pettey studied at Edinburgh, where he graduated with honours to M. B., C.M., proceeding afterwards to his M.D. When the Boer War broke out Dr. Pettey sailed for South Africa, and saw two years service with the R.A.M.C. On returning to London he took his F.R.C.S. (England), and then married and settled down at Eastbourne, where he was surgeon to the Prince Alice Hospital for some eight years. After further experience he came to New Zealand in 1914, proceeding straight to Ashburton on arrival. Here he became a partner to Dr. G. Lyon but had only been here a short time when he left for England to offer his services in connection with the Great War. For some 18 months he was attached to the Walton-on-Thames New Zealand Military Hospital.
Dr. Pettey, who was highly esteemed, leaves a widow and two daughters to mourn their loss. -Ashburton Guardian, 29/9/1922.
