Robert Chesterman joined the RNZAF in 1942 and was initially trained in New Zealand before futrher training in Canada, at No. 3 Wireless Training School, Winnipeg. He embarked for Britain in October, 1943.
After further training in Britain, he was posted to No. 37 Squadron, RAF, flying in twin-engined Wellington bombers on supply-dropping operations, flying out of Foggia, Italy.
On November 22, 1944, he was part of a raid to bomb railway marshalling yards in Hungary. His aircraft failed to return. Other crews on the raid reported seeing aircraft being shot down by nightfighters. Robert and his crew were posted "missing, presumed dead."

CHESTERMAN — On November 23, 1944, N.Z. 425763, Flight Sergeant Robert Charles, dearly loved husband of Linda Evelyn Chesterman (nee McElhinney), 64 Oxford Street. (Previously reported missing, now officially presumed dead.)
