FATAL ACCIDENT AT HINDS.
A sad accident occurred in the Hinds district at 4.30 yesterday afternoon, resulting in the death of Agatha, the seven-year-old daughter of Mr Arthur Stewart.
It appears that the child was on her way home from school, and entered one of her father's paddocks for the purpose of getting a ride over part of the remaining distance on a Cambridge roller, which was at work in the field. The man in charge of the team, Thomas Bright, responded to the child's request, and lifted her on to the roller. Shortly after this, a young horse that formed one of the team, turned its head and became frightened on seeing the child's white clothing. The animal plunged violently, and the child was thrown in front of the roller, which passed over her body, and death must have been instantaneous.
The man made all possible haste in unyoking his team, and then carried the body of the child to Mr Stewart's residence. A medical man and the police were informed, and an inquest will be held before Mr V. G. Day, S.M., Coroner, this morning at about 10.30.
INQUEST.
An inquest was held this morning before the Coroner, Mr V. G. Day, S.M., at Hinds, touching the death of Agatha, the seven-year-old daughter of Mr Arthur Stewart. The evidence showed that the child was returning home from school, and asked Thomas Bright, one of Mr Stewart's employees, for a ride on a Cambridge roller, which he was driving homewards. The child mounted the roller, and then, from some cause, a young horse in the team took fright, and Bright lost control of the reins. The child endeavoured to jump from her seat, but fell forward, and the heavy roller passed over her body killing her instantly. A verdict of Accidental Death was returned. -Ashburton Guardian, 6/12/1910.
