6/1177 Private William Baxter Morrison, (23/3/1890-20/5/1915). "their brave son"

THE LATE PRIVATE MORRISON. 

The late Private W. B. Morrison was a son of the County Engineer (Mr Charles Morrison). He was about 24 years of age. He was educated first at the Springburn School and afterwards at the Ashburton High School. On leaving school he joined the firm of Messrs Nicoll Bros., Ashburton, with whom he stayed for about three years. He was afterwards employed by the local branch of the National Mortgage and Agency Company, and before he enlisted was in the employ of Messrs Maling and Company, of Christchurch. While in Ashburton, he was a member of the Presbyterian Young Men's Bible Class. He was highly respected by all who knew him.  -Ashburton Guardian, 28/5/1915.

William Morrison was admitted to the 15th General Hospital in Alexandria, Egypt, on May 16, 1915, suffering from "gunshot wound compound fracture left knee and compound fracture right thigh." He died of his wounds four days later.

The following resolution was carried, members standing in silence, at the monthly meeting of the Ashburton County Council to-day: — "That this Council expresses its sincere sympathy with the County Engineer (Mr J. Morrison) and Mrs Morrison in the loss of their brave son, William Baxter Morrison, who gave his life in defence of the Empire."  -Ashburton Guardian, 4/6/1915.
