Radam's "Microbe Killer" -"the ultimate hope of the medical profession"

Image courtesy of "Rick's Bottle Room.com"

In the latter half of the nineteenth century is was shown with increasing certainty that many of the diseases which had afflicted the human species for millenia were caused by other living things that were too small to be seen with the naked eye.  It was proven that some of those caused infection in open wounds - infection whcih could be countered or prevented by manufactured substances to kill the microscopic creatures.

What if, then, you could drink something with the same effect? What if you could make something to remove the "microbes" from the body, and hence the disease?

William Radam, a market gardener from Texas, had the solution - literally...

THE MICROBE KILLER VERSUS DR KOCH’S CONSUMPTION CURE.

KOCH, the now Illustrious Doctor, probably deserves more credit for the amount of cheap advertising secured from the Press of the World than he will ultimately be accorded for the discovery itself. The eagerness, too, displayed by the Medical Fraternity in sustaining the public interest in the alleged Cure is further evidence of the discoverer’s astuteness. He is evidently fully aware of his confreres' enthusiastic devotedness to their own welfare, and the public will the more readily recognise this when they remember that Dr Koch’s lymph being a Deadly Poison can only be administered by a physician. Hence it is entirely to the interest of the Profession to create confidence in the efficacy of the remedy.

On the other hand, the MICROBE KILLER, which destroys the germ of the Disease — not by inoculating a Foreign Microbe into the system that creates a New Disease, and rarely effecting a Cure — is a much more wonderful scientific discovery for killing the Microbe in the lungs of the Consumptive than Dr Koch’s ever can be, and yet it fails to attract the interest or recommendation of medical men, simply because it is a harmless commercial fluid, which can safely be administered by anyone possessing ordinary common sense and judgment. The MICROBE KILLER is a fluid charged with certain powerful Gases, that, liberated in the stomach, searches the whole system, positively killing all germ life existing in any part of the body. In every instance it Heals the Lungs, Increases the Appetite, Improves the Digestion, and Assists Nature by stimulating every organ in the body.

Although it can be taken with perfect safety by the most delicate invalid, its effect on all heretofore Incurable diseases is simply marvellous. Dyspeptics feel benefit from a single dose.

LOCAL TESITMONIALS.

Calton, North-east Valley Bakery, Dunedin, June 2,  1891

To Radam Microbe Killer Company.

I am very pleased to give you a testimonial for the relief I have obtained by the use of your MICROBE KILLER. I have taken one jar of it for sciatica, from which I have been a bad sufferer for three months, being hardly able to crawl about; but now I feel quite well. I will continue to use it. All other medicines I took had no effect on me. I could neither sleep nor rest for the pains in my legs and back. My age is 59. I am well known in the Valley, and many can vouch for the above. I merely hand you this for the benefit of other sufferers.

I am, gentlemen, Yours truly, T. TYRRELL, Baker.

Ferguslie. North-east Valley.

To Radam Microbe Killer Company, Dunedin.

Gentlemen,— I have much pleasure in giving you a testimonial for the MICROBE KILLER, as it has proved a blessing to me. I would highly recommend it to anyone suffering from Chronic Rheumatic. I have tried every possible remedy I could think of, but nothing ever did me any good but RADAMS MICROBE KILLER. After taking the contents of one jar I am another man. I am between 60 and 70 years of age, and am well known in New Zealand.

Just in case anyone is unsure, neither sciatica nor rheumatism is caused by an agent from outside the human body.

THE MICROBE KILLER.

A POSITIVE ANTIDOTE FOR WOMEN’S AND CHILDREN’S DISEASES.

MICROBE KILLER speedily removes all internal as well as external irritations; no inflammation can possibly remain long in the system where it is used. Mothers find it invaluable for children’s teething troubles; the lives of hundreds have already been saved, when all other remedies have failed; a single dose — for infants one teaspoonful in sweetened water — will invariably stop dysentery, and, as it allays irritation, natural evacuations follow. It contains neither drugs, chemicals, nor herbs; hence it has no injurious effect upon the most delicate invalid or youngest child. The thinking public will readily understand that MICROBE KILLER is no quack preparation, but based purely upon the Germ Theory, exactly meets the requirements of leading scientists of the present time as an antidote for all diseases, inasmuch as it contains only distilled water, strongly impregnated with gases and electricity, that penetrate every tissue of the system, killing the germs of disease in every part of the body. The destruction of these germs is as much a law of Nature as their development. Nature fights against the development of these germs for years, in strong, hardy constitutions; but when any organ of the body becomes weak, through over-straining or otherwise, that part is no longer able to combat the ravages of that death-dealing pest — the microbe — and gradually becomes weaker and weaker, until it cannot perform its natural functions. As all the organs of the body are closely dependant upon each other, other complications soon follow, until the patient is pronounced incurable. RADAM’S MICROBE KILLER, however, goes directly at the cause, kills the microbes, and, as soon as their ravages are arrested, Nature speedily restores these organs — not one, but all — to a healthy condition, enabling them to again perform their proper functions. Hence, no disease is incurable if MICROBE KILLER be used before the affected organs are wasted away. MICROBE KILLER will positively kill the disease; but will not make new organs. Dyspeptics feel benefit from a single dose.

TO RADAM’S MICROBE KILLER COMPANY, 40 Elizabeth street, Melbourne. Dear Sirs, — I have just completed numerous experiments with RADAM’S MICROBE KILLER as a destroyer of germ life, and have proved its efficacy in each case so far as my experiments have gone. However, a most important feature appears to have been overlooked by you, that is, the effect of MICROBE KILLER on germ life in water. An addition of one-half an ounce of MICROBE KILLER to one gallon of water destroyed all animalcula and germs instantly, rendering the water absolutely pure. Experiments have been made with both Yarra and Yan Yean water. As it is an established fact that typhoid and other germs exist in the Melbourne drinking water, and undoubtedly cause the epidemic prevalent every year, I would strongly recommend the use of MICROBE KILLER in filters and in the water used for domestic purposes. When cleaning filters a much stronger solution should be used, as impure filtration is at all times dangerous, I have every confidence in stating that RADAM’S MICROBE KILLER is the most perfect antiseptic that has come under my notice.—Yours truly

F. TIZZARD WELSH, Analyst, 133 William street, Melbourne.

THE NEW REMEDY.

William Radam’s Microbe Killer, the first remedy given to the world under the now universally prevalent theory which ascribes all sickness and disease to microbe invasion, has two broad claims to the full confidence of mankind. First, it meets the requirement and fulfils the prediction of the highest scientific intelligence of the age.

It is the identical remedy foreseen by the illustrious Tyndall and Pasteur as the ultimate hope of the medical profession, and has the prestige of practical endorsement by those whose splendid discoveries have revolutionised the medical theories of mankind. But, in the second place, and aside from this prestige of eminent scientific acceptance, the new remedy has been openly before the world for over four years, has had practical trial of its matchless healing and curative virtues, and may now he known by its fruits and judged by its works. Thousands of cultivated communities all over the world have been eye-witnesses of its new and apparently miraculous action in consumption, rheumatism, Bright’s disease, dyspepsia, scrofula, pneumonia, bronchitis, asthma, cancer, blood poisoning, &c,; and by tens of thousands are coming forward to bear personal testimony to its cures of diseases which have heretofore constituted the incurable list. There are no facts of modern and contemporary history subject to more perfect proof than that of the triumph of Radam’s Microbe Killer over the diseases of civilisation. The record of its splendid works is as tangible to public understanding as the record of recent electric discoveries in such new facts as the telephone, the arc light, the phonograph, &c., the reader bearing in mind that the Microbe Killer is neither powder nor syrup, neither old school mineral nor new school vegetable, but a tonic drink, being pure water combined with a powerful medicinal gas that permeates the entire system, coming for trade purposes in gallon jars, and drank by the wine-glassful, with results as nutritive and wholesome, to the blood and vital organs as sweet mountain air is nutritive and wholesome to the lungs, whether in health or in disease.

Pamphlets giving full information can be had free, or will be posted to any address on application to office.

“ A PLAIN STATEMENT TO INVALIDS ”

as to what Wm. Radam’s Microbe Killer will do for them if they will persevere in its use.

We can guarantee a cure in almost every instance where the patient does not expect too much in too short a time. As there are no drugs whatever in this remedy, it follows that it does not act simply as a narcotic or pain-killer, in the general acceptation of the term.

The remedy is not merely a palliative, but is directly curative, and the benefits derived from its use therefore permanent.

Disease is a fermentation of the blood and tissues.

No fermentation or decay (hence no sickness) can take place without the presence of microbes.

Microbes are Nature’s destroying element.

To destroy microbes, a powerful antiseptic must be used. Many of the agents employed for this purpose are, as we know, poisons. Arsenic, chloroform, digitalis, cocaine, morphine, belladonna, mercury and calomel are among the most dangerous ones usually employed in the attempt to destroy microbes. Microbes cannot be driven out of the system, and no disease can be cured, unless the antiseptic may be administered in quantities large enough to permeate the entire system.

No charge for pamphlets, to be had from the Canterbury Agency.

William Radam may have sincerely believed that his Microbe Killer was all that he claimed, but what was in it?  It will surprise nobody that water was by far the main ingredient - over 99%. There was neither "Gas" nor "Electricity" in its makeup.  Radam's 1886 patent shows that his process was to mix together powdered sulphur, sodium nitrate, manganese oxide, sandalwood, and potassium chloride.  These were burned in a retort and the vapours resulting were mixed with steam and allowed to condense.  It was then filtered and a small amount of wine added for colour.

William Radam died in 1902 - a rich man whose patent concoction had been challenged in court in the USA and found wanting.  New Zealand papers carried his last advertising in 1900 and a 1902 story about the causes and treament of cancer describes using the microbe killer against it as "to practice on human credibility."
