Captain John Pietersen, 1831-5/7/1880.

Intelligence was received yesterday from Dunedin by telegram which led to the inference that Captain Pietersen of the p.s. Taiaroa was dead. The wording, however, was not quite clear, and tbe message was sent back to be repeated. The wires are down somewhere near Tarawera, so that it was impossible to confirm or nullify the inference. Upon receipt of the doubtful news the Union S.S. Co. had the flags ou all their shipping in port hoisted half-mast high. Captain Pietersen was in fair health when last heard of, and his friends are sanguine that he is still in the enjoyment thereof, ominous report notwithstanding.   -NZ Herald, 6/7/1880.

Captain Pietersen of. the Union Company’s steamer Taiaroa died at Dunedin on Monday morning. The news of his death will be received with much regret by those who have travelled with him and experienced his urbanity and courtesy. Captain Pietersen was here in his steamer about a fortnight ago, so that his illness has been very short.   -Marlborough Press, 9/7/1880.

When the news of the death of Captain Pietersen of the Taiaroa was received in town on Monday the vessels in port at once hoisted their flags half-mast out of respect to the memory of one of the most esteemed commanders on the coast. The deceased gentleman was one of the oldest officers in the service of the Otago Harbor Company — a corporation which some years since was merged into the present Union Company.   -NZ Mail, 10/7/1880.

The Dunedin Herald of the 6th says: — It is with much regret we have to announce the death of Captain Pietersen, master of the Union Company's P.S. Taiaroa, which took place at his residence, Dunedin, at 10 a.m. yesterday. Captain Pietersen was an old identity here, having been master of the cutter Garnett fully twenty years ago. He traded her on the coast until she was sold, and then he entered the lightering trade between Port Chalmers and Dunedin, having charge of the iron lighter Faithful. After remaining in this trade for some length of time, he entered the employment of the Harbour Steam Company, and had command of the Beautiful Star, Pretty Jane, Maori, and Taiaroa, during a portion of the time being in the service of the Union Steamship Company.   -NZ Herald, 14/7/1880.
