Flags were flying yesterday at Mosgiel as a mark of respect to the memory of Lance-corporal William Dunlop Rowan who has recently lost his life in the Empire's cause, and whose death was announced in last night’s ‘Star.’ He was born in Mosgiel, and attended the local school there. Afterwards he was employed at Messrs Turnbull and Jones electrical engineers. Some three at four years since, when the family removed to Winton, he remained on the Taieri, residing with his grandfather, Mr Dryden who is well known in Mosgiel. Lance-corporal Rowan enlisted last March, and went to Trentham. In July he was sent to Gallipoli, where he met his death about December 8. -Evening Star, 8/1/1916.
William Dunlop was killed at a quiet time near the end of the Gallipoli campaign. Winter was setting in and evacuation had been decided upon. It is likely he was killed by a Turkish sniper.
