Arthur Barber, 1855-27/2/1879.

It is with sincere regret that we record the death of our promising young townsman, Mr Arthur Barber, who died yesterday after a short illness, and who adds yet one more to the list of those who have met with an untimely death from accidents while playing at football. Mr Barber was articled to Mr John McGregor, civil engineer, and had almost completed his articles. He was a prominent member of the volunteers, being at the time of his death one of the officers and secretary of the Dunedin Naval Brigade, and also secretary of the Union Football Club, and an enthusiastic cricketer. Early in the season (we understand in July last) while playing at football on the North Dunedin Recreation Ground, he received a kick at the back of the left ear, sustaining serious injury, and which ultimately caused his death.  -Otago Daily Times, 1/3/1879.

FOOTBALL.

The annual meeting of the Union Football Club was held at the Douglas Hotel on Tuesday evening, Mr W C Kirkcaldy (president) in the chair...

The Committee had to record, with deep regret, the loss which the Cub had sustained in the melancholy death of their much-respected secretary, the late Mr Arthur Barber — regret which they were sure would be shared in by every footballer in Otago.  -Otago Witness, 22/3/1897.

In reference to the statement made in our columns, on the authority of the Otago papers, that Mr. Arthur Barber, the late Secretary to the Dunedin Football Club, died recently from the effects of an accident at football, having received "a kick at the back of the left ear while playing football last year," Mr. W. P. James — who, while in Wellington, was known as a skilful and enthusiastic player — writes to us: — "I am in a position to state that the cause of his death was not attributable to a kick received at football, but to an affection from which he had been suffering since he was thirteen years of age."  -Evening Post, 24/3/1879.
