38967 Lance Corporal James Lee, (9/7/1896-3/7/1919). "died of sickness"

A casualty list was issued yesterday afternoon, reporting a soldier, Lance-Corporal James Lee, 38967, as having died of sickness in New Zealand, his next-of-kin is his mother, Mrs A. Lee, who resides in Ireland.  -NZ Times, 9/7/1919.

James Lee suffered a gunshot wound on December 20, 1917.  It was a time during which his Regiment, the Canterburys, was out of the line.  It may have been an unfortunate accident.

His wound is described as abdominal and penetrating the bladder.  The is probably a world of pain behind those words.  His Army record does not reveal his ultimate cause of death.

Ashburton Cemetery.
