78601 Trooper Arnold Hodson Maddren, (29/1/1898-5/12/1919). "good hearted and genial"

On Wednesday last Trooper Arnold Maddren was presented by the employees of Maddren Bros., Winchester with a fountain pen and soldier’s outfit. Mr T. Stone, in making the presentation, wished Trooper Maddren every success at the front and a safe return home again, which remarks were endorsed by Messrs Opie, Scott, Moore, and P. Surridge. After the presentation (which took place at Mr R. Maddren’s house), a most enjoyable musical evening was spent. Songs by Misses Maddren and Pegley, Messrs Maddren, A. Opie, ,P. Surridge, L. Scott, and L. Davis were much enjoyed. Trooper Maddren thanked the men for their present, and said he would try and do his best at the front. Mr R. Maddren also thanked the men for their good wishes for his son. “Auld Lang Syne," “God Save the King,’’ and a hearty vote of thanks to Mr and Mrs Maddren brought to a conclusion a most pleasant evening.  -Temuka Leader, 12/9/1918.

OBITUARY.

DEATH OF A RETURNED SOLDIER

Deep regret was felt and expressed in Winchester and Temuka last Thursday evening, when it became known that Mr Arnold Hodson Maddren, only son of Mr and Mrs K Maddren, had passed away after a very short illness. It is not many months since he returned from Egypt where he had been serving his King and Country in the Mounted forces. The late Trooper Maddren was born in Christchurch, but had spent a great part of his life in Winchester. On reaching the age of 20, he enlisted the forces, and was sent away to Egypt, and arrived just about the time the Armistice was signed, and with his comrades performed a good deal of police duty. He arrived back in New Zealand two months ago, and got the usual warm welcome accorded to the boys on their return home. He was a good hearted and genial young fellow, liked and respected by all who knew him, and great sympathy is felt for his bereaved parents and other relatives. He was only 22 years of age. The funeral took place at Temuka on Saturday and was largely attended. The cortege was headed by about thirty returned soldiers who acted as guard of honour. The casket was covered with the Union Jack on which was placed deceased's uniform. Beautiful floral tokens of sympathy were sent by Mr and Mrs W. D. Lilley, Mr and Miss Aitken, Mr and Mrs Opie, Mr and Mrs T H. Stone, Mr and Mrs W. Pearse and family, Mr and Mrs Duke and family, Mr and Mrs W. Palmer, Mr and Mrs C. Hammond and family, Mr and Mrs Brooks, ”Joe and Florrie,” Mrs A L. Barker, S. and B Turner, the Longford family, Mr and Mrs T. Harrison, Mr and Mrs John Beeby, Mr and Mrs J. Wilks and family, Mr and Mrs J. Wilks and G McBratney, aunties and cousins in Timaru, Mrs Louden and family, Mrs Con Haar, Mr and Mrs Barrett, and Mr and Mrs Marshall, Mr and Mrs J. Bennett and family, and others.   -Temuka Leader, 9/12/1919.
