CRASH DURING TRAINING FLIGHT

Sergeant James Horne McClafferty, whose father is Mr J. L. McClafferty, Timaru, lost his life hear a North Island air station yesterday when his aircraft crashed during a training flight. -Ashburton Guardian, 7/10/1944.

Requiem Mass. — A Requiem Mass, attended by the pupils of all the Catholic schools and a large number of parishioners, was celebrated yesterday in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Craigie Avenue, by the Rev. Father J. Mannix, S.M., for Sergeant Pilot James Horne McClafferty, who was killed last week in an aircraft accident. Deceased was recently a pupil of St Patrick’s High School, which has suffered its first war casualty. Six of the present pupils acted as pallbearers, and the other scholars formed a guard of honour in Craigie Avenue through which the cortege passed. -Timaru Herald, 12/10/1944.

James McClafferty was flying with No. 4 OTU (Operational Training Unit) when he took off in a P-40 Kittyhawk fighter and crashed fatally near Bulls.
