Henry Riddell, (1852-24/7/1912). "a pig yard"

KILLED BY A BOAR.

AN OLD MAN'S DEATH.

An old resident of Washdyke, Mr H. Riddell, a labourer at the Smithfield Freezing Works, met his death in an untimely way on Tuesday night. He had been to Temuka during the day, and on returning in the evening went over a few yards from his house to a pig yard belonging to T. McWhirter and Sons (a yard attached to their Washdyke slaughter yards) to feed the pigs. It was not part of his duty to do this, but boiled food was always left ready for the pigs, and deceased, who took an interest in the herd, was in the habit of feeding them whenever he thought they required it. On leaving his home last night he said he was going to give the pigs some food, and though he did not return for some time, his wife was not anxious as she thought he had probably gone to a neighbour and had stopped chatting there. It appears however, that such was not the case. Mrs Riddell went to bed thinking that her husband would return later, but on finding yesterday morning that he had not returned she became alarmed, and search was made for him. He was found by a young man named Geaney, in the pig yard referred to, quite dead. One leg was rather badly torn, the main artery in the groin severed, and it is supposed that the deceased died from loss of blood and exposure. There was a boar in the pig yard, and it is surmised that this animal attacked him when he was feeding the herd. The police were informed yesterday, when Constable Smith went out and brought the body in to the morgue. Dr Dryden made a post mortem examination last night, and an Inquest will be held at 9.30 this morning.  -Timaru Herald, 25/7/1912.
