9/449 George McMillan, 9/11/1890-17/9/1926.

 Deaths

McMILLAN. — At Wakari, on September 17th, 9/449 Trooper George McMillan, third son of the late William and Margaret McMillan, of Waitahuna, and beloved husband of Violet McMillan; in his 36th year. — E. McLean and Son, undertakers.  -Evening star, 17/9/1926.

George McMillan was the brother of John, beside whom he was buried ten years later.

I am again indebted to the "Online Cenotaph" for information about George (as well as his photograph), in the form of a descendant's comment.

"George Mcmillan was my maternal grandfather. He survived the war and married Violet Nikander (1919?) and had two children, George and Ceceilia (my mother). His jaw was blown off at Gallipoli and in preparation for a reconstruction of his jaw it was discovered he had tuberculosis. He spent several months at Wakari (Dunedin) sanatorium and succumbed to penumonia in 1926. His elder brother received a head wound at Gallipoli and died soon after returning to New Zealand. They are buried side by side at Waitahuna? in the South Island."

The details of the action in which action George McMillan suffered his wound are not easy to find.  The Official History of the Otago Regiment shows no definite action on the date - June 17, 1915 - merely mentioning that the Regiment was in the front line and that "The garrison of the forward line was periodically violently harassed by the enemy, and on these occasions numerous casualties were suffered and the defences badly breached."
