Casualties
A young man named William Gill, employed on the Hillersden station, Marlborough, received injuries whilst burning scrub on Friday last which resulted in his death. He was hemmed in between two fires in a gully and could not escape. He sought refuge in a small excavation in the ground made by pigs rooting, and lay amidst suffocating smoke while the flames passed over one-half of his body. After the danger was over Gill made his way to the camp, and was conveyed to Blenheim Hospital. One side of his body was much injured, the arm being burned almost to the bone, and his face was badly disfigured. He died on Sunday morning. -Otago Witness, 27/9/1894.
