John Adams grew up on View street, in central Dunedin and enlisted in The NZ Rifle Brigade in May, 1915. He was seriously wounded on Christmas Day, 1915, in a little-known campaign, against the Senussi tribe in western Egypt. It was the Rifles' first engagement.
John, after recovering, went with the Rifles to France. During the Battle of the Somme his Battalion made good progress in their attack ion September 15, but the depletion of their ranks by German resistance and the relative lack of success of the unit advancing on their left mean that some of the hard-won territory had to be given up.
John Adams died during the advance and was left on the field. He has no known grave.
