470 Corporal George Giesler, 15/5/1891-25/7/1916. "our anzac hero"

The village of Pozieres was one of the objectives of the Battle of the Somme.  Australia's official war historian, Charles Bean, remarked that Pozieres Ridge "is more densely sown with Australian sacrifice than any other place on earth."

One of those sacrificed for Pozieres was George Giesler from Leith Valley, Dunedin.

Mr William Giesler, of Leith Valley, has received advice that his son. Private G. Giesler, of the Fifth Battalion, Australian Force, previously reported wounded, has been discharged from hospital and is now on furlough in Great Britain.   -Evening Star, 22/6/1915.
