John Hocking Semmens, (1847-28/7/1911). "without the slightest warning"

 OBITUARY.

John Semmens—64 Years.

A sudden death took place at Pembroke on Friday, July 28th (writes our Wanaka correspondent) when Mr John Semmens passed away suddenly at his residence. Deceased had been ailing for some little time from heart trouble, but during the last week appeared to be greatly improved, but on Friday morning he suddenly expired without the slightest warning. Deceased was an old identity of the Wanaka district, and was a native of Cornwall, England. He was well known and highly esteemed throughout the district. The funeral took at Pembroke on Monday last, when a large number from all parts of the district followed the remains to their last resting place. The Rev. A. D. Mitchell conducted the burial service in a most impressive manner. Deceased leaves a wife and a grown up son to whom we tender our sincere sympathy in their sad bereavement.  -Lake County Press, 3/8/1911.

A feeling of pained surprise pervaded Wanaka district last week when it became known that Mr John Hocking Semmens, of Pembroke, had died suddenly, at the age of 64. Mr Semmens was a native of Cornwall, and came to Cromwell in the early times. Some years afterwards he took a trip Home, and made a few months’ stay at the Cape and in South Australia, before returning to Wanaka. When Griffel goldfield was going he was engaged in mining, after that mostly at station work. About 20 years ago he married Miss Amy Hedditch, eldest daughter of Captain Hedditch, who is thus left a widow. He has lived in Pembroke ever since, where his beautiful home and attractive garden were always a noticeable feature of the town.  -Otago Witness, 9/8/1911.
