8/293 Private Frederick Smith, (12/4/1893-4/5/1915). "our dear nephew"

PERSONAL SKETCHES.

THE KILLED AXD WOUNDED.

Private Frederick Smith, reported killed, was the third son of the late Mr George Smith, who for many years was an employee of the Union Steam Ship Company. Private Smith, who was 20 years of age, was a Territorial in the 4th (Otago) Regiment, but, being at Tapanui when the Expeditionary Force was mobilised, joined the 9th (Southland) Company of the Otago Battalion. His mother resides at 26 Harrow street, Dunedin. Another son (George) is serving with the Auckland Battalion.   -Evening Star, 25/5/1915.

Frederick Smith died on a day when, as reported in the Otagos' Official History, his unit had fought since landing at Gallipoli and won as much ground as they could until a lack of supplies and artillery support halted them.  He was wounded in the head and chest by hand grenades and died at an advanced dressing station.
