2929 Private Andrew Moncrief Given, (?)-19/7/1919. "success in the grand old game"

PRIVATE A. M. GIVEN.

Amongst the list of casualties amongst New Zealanders with the Australian Imperial Forces appears the name of Private A. M. Given, reported missing on July 19. Private Given is the only son of' Mr Andrew Given, of Maitland street, and is well known in Dunedin Cricketing circles. “Andy” was very popular with his fellow-players, being of a quiet, unassuming disposition, and he took his success in the grand old game with characteristic modesty. Had it not been for a spell which he took from cricket for some seasons Andy Given would have been a representative player. He was employed in his father's business (paper merchant) for some time, then went to Messrs Orr and Campbell's, and a couple of years ago he left Dunedin to try his luck in Australia. “Andy’s” many friends will sincerely hope that he will yet turn up safe and well.   -Evening Star, 12/9/1916.

Andy's many friends were to be disappointed in 1917, when a Court of Enquiry's verdict stated that he had been killed in action.

Andersons Bay Cemetery, Dunedin.
