35010 Private Robert Fairbairn, 14/2/1896-4/10/1917. "a difficult day's fighting"


Telegraphic advice has been received by Mr and Mrs E. H. Fairbairn (Puerua) from the Minister for Defence (Sir James Allen) that their son, Private Robert Fairbairn, was killed in action in France on October 4. Private Fairbairn enlisted in this district, and was 21 years of age at the time of his death.   -Bruce Herald, 29/10/1917.


Robert Fairburn was killed during the attack on a village named Gravenstafel, as part of the Battle of Passchendaele.  It was a difficult day's fighting but a success for Robert's Battalion, the 3rd of the Otago Infantry Regiment.


At the meeting of the Greenfield Farmers' Union on Saturday the chairman (Mr A. Craig) moved a motion of sympathy with the relatives of the soldiers from the district who had lost their lives while on active service. The secretary was instructed to write to the parents of the following men who have made the supreme sacrifice: — Private William Coates, Private B. Fairbairn, Private James Burns, Private B. Rogers, Private A. K. .Stephens and Private Andrew Allan (died of meningitis). It was also decided to write conveying the sympathy of the union with the parents of the following men who have been wounded, and expressing the hope that they would speedily recover: — George Linklater, Private S. R. Shaw, Private Alf. Lucas and Private W. Kell.  -Clutha Leader, 9/11/1917.
