Lieutenant Arthur Edwin Colin Bell, RNR, (24/11/1918-6/8/1942). "posted as missing"

HM Submarine Thorn was launched in March, 1941 and began patrols in the Mediterranean shortly after.  After sinking four Italian ships, Thorn was patrolling off the coast of Crete when it was spotted by an Italian plane.  The Italian torpedo boat Pegaso, escorting a freighter saw the plane machine-gunning the sea and moved in to attack. Pegaso made sonar contact and carried out seven attacks, then lost contact.  Thorn is believed to have been sunk in this action and was posted as missing on August 11.

Arthur Bell is one of the many men whose name is on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

Andersons Bay Cemetery, Dunedin.
