23/821 Sapper George Stafford Matheson, 12/12/1882-30/7/1919. "crowded and badly ventilated"

Sapper George Stafford Matheson, who died at Wakari Hospital on Wednesday, was buried with military honors in the Southern Cemetery this afternoon. The late Sapper Matheson left New Zealand with the first Rifle Brigade, and later joined the New Zealand Tunnelling Corps. He was the second son of Mr J. S. Matheson, of 53 Tyne street, Roslyn, and was in his 36th year.  -Evening Star, 1/8/1919.

George Matheson died of tuberculosis of the lungs, a common cause of death in the years just after the war.  By that time it was fairly well known that TB was a communicable disease but that did not prevent it being transmitted in crowded and badly ventilated troop ships, barracks, dugouts and, probably, tunnels.

Southern Cemetery, Dunedin.
