William Tennet, 1819-19/4/1884. "crossing the sludge channel"

We regret to learn that Mr William Tennet, commercial traveller for Messrs Mackerras and Hazlett, met his death on Saturday afternoon near Tinkers. Mr Tennet was on his way from Tinkers to Black’s, and it appears from a telegram received in town to-day that he must have been jolted out of the buggy while crossing the sludge channel. It is stated that the dangerous character of this crossing has been the subject of frequent representations to the Vincent County Council. Possibly, now that a valuable life has been sacrificed, it will be put in a safe and passable condition. Mr Tennet has been in the employ of Messrs Mackerras and. Hazlett for a number of years, and was held by them in very high esteem. An inquest is to be held to-day at Blacks, and we are informed that arrangements have been made for the conveyance of his remains to Dunedin.  -Evening Star, 21/4/1884.

Our readers will hear with regret the death of Mr William Tennet, as the result of an accident that happened to him on Saturday afternoon, while driving between Tinkers and Blacks. He must have been jolted out of the buggy on to his head while crossing the sludge channel. His body when found was quite lifeless, and a wound caused by the fall was noticed on his head. Mr Tennet had been for nearly 15 years in the employ of Messrs Mckerras and Hazlett, of this city, as a commercial traveller. He was well known throughout the province, and during his commercial career made many friends, especially on the goldfields, where he had travelled a great deal. The deceased gentleman was a widower, and leaves a family who are all grown up. He resided at Mornington.  -Otago Witness, 26/4/1884.
