Captain Peter Laing, Master Mariner, 1848-20/3/1918. "moving some logs down a hill"

From Whangape comes news of the death as the result of an accident of Captain Lang. The deceased was born in Glasgow 70 years ago, and was well known in Dunedin in shipping and other circles. For many years he was master of a number of schooners engaged in carrying timber between Auckland and Dunedin, including the Isabella Anderson, of which he was the owner, and which was eventually wrecked at Raglan. About 15 years ago he left the sea, and became associated with the Whangape Timber Company, and he was on one of his periodical visits there from Dunedin when he met his death in the bush while inspecting the company's property. In the early seventies the late Captain Lang was connected with small coasting traders running to Catlins River, his genial disposition making him a prime favorite with the settlers in the Owaka district. He was subsequently master of the schooners Janet Ramsay and Owake, engaged in the same trade. The body is to be brought to Dunedin. Captain Lang's widow resides in Mornington. He also leaves a son (Mr W. Lang) and two daughters, one of whom is married.   -Evening Star, 21/3/1918.

The secretary of the Whangape Timber Company, Mr. W. R. Paterson, has been supplied with the particulars of the accident whereby Captain Lang, the company's manager at Whangape, met with his death at Whangape on Wednesday last. Captain Lang, along with the company's rafting contractor, Mr. John Harrison, was watching the process of moving some logs down a hill to the Rotokakahi River, a distance of 600 feet when the last log going down the chute struck a tree-stump, and, deviating, flew towards the two men, crushing Captain Lang. Death was instantaneous.  -Auckland Star, 23/3/1918.
