56938 Private Andrew Mowat Manson, (5/12/1880-3/12/1917). "a very fine specimen"

 PRIVATE A. M. MANSON

Private Andrew Manson, reported missing from 3rd December, left N.Z. with the 28th Reinforcements, so that he could not have been in the trenches more than a month or so. He was born in the Old Country but at an early age came out to New Zealand with his parents. He received his education at the Lower Shotover school, his father being at that time manager of the Kawarau Falls Station for the Loan and Mercantile Agency, Ltd. At the time of his enlistment Private Manson was manager for the Public Trust, of Duke Bros' estate, Creighton, and was also a partner with his brother, John Manson, in a station at the Branches. Private Manson took part in the South African war, going out from N.Z. as a member of the 8th contingent. His age is 37 years.  -Lake Wakatip Mail, 8/1/1918.

Andrew Manson was found to be missing and presumed killed by a Court of Enquiry after the abortive attack on Polderhoek Chateau (or, at least, the ruins of it) by the Otago Infantry Regiemnt in December of 1917.

Private Andrew Manson, who paid the great price for his country on December 3, was a son of the late Mr Donald Manson, of Kaiwera, and Mrs Manson, of Invercargill, formerly of Gore. He left the Dominion with the 28th Reinforcements and prior to joining the Expeditionary Forces was jointly interested with his brother in the Branches Station near Queenstown. He was a very fine specimen of physical manhood and a general favorite among a large circle of friends. He was a brother of Mrs Fred. Wallis, jun., of Gore.   -Mataura Ensign, 17/1/1918.

Mataura Cemetery.
