Robert Oswald Hamilton, (1896-21/12/1924). "I'll show you what I can do"

SUICIDE AT MATAURA

DEATH OF R. O. HAMILTON.

Robert Oswald Hamilton, a single man, of Mataura, committed suicide by taking poison on Sunday at about 12.30 p.m. The deceased was a labourer, and resided with his parents at Mataura. He has been under the treatment of Dr Lyth, specialist in tubercular diseases at the Palmerston South Sanatorium, and had been ordered by him to Central Otago. Deceased spent about 12 months working in orchards and rabbiting, later coming to Mataura. For the past three months he had been out of work, and was very much depressed at times. Yesterday he was in a very low state of mind, and passed a remark to his mother and sister: “I’m fed up with things; I’ll show you what I can do.” He then went to his belongings in the passage, took out a bottle containing strychnine, and, proceeding to the scullery, mixed the poison with some water, and then drank it. He expired within half an hour, all stimulants failing to revive him.

The deceased man was 26 years of age.  -Southland Times, 23/12/1924.
