8/1272 Private Joseph Jones,(13/9/1888-7/8/1915). "honoured be his name"

August 8, 1915, was the day of the great assault on the Gallipoli heights. With possession of territory overlooking the Dardanelle straits, observers could direct fire from Royal Navy battleships onto the forts of the straits; forts which had repelled the Navy in its attempt to force the straits months before.

The approach to the heights was a difficult one and Turkish opposition was strong. Both sides knew the importance of the heights.  Fire was fierce and casualties were heavy on both sides.

Joseph's Army record has a concise description of the wound which killed him: "shrap(nel) wnd mouth tracheotomy performed." He lies in No. 2 Outpost Cemetery on the Peninsula.
