DEATHS
Dempster. - On the 31st March, at Coromandel Hospital, of typhoid fever, Charlie, the beloved husband of Alice Maud Dempster and fourth son of A. Dempster, Waikouaiti; aged 25 years. Deeply regretted. -Otago Witness, 7/4/1898.
It is with regret that we (Coromandel County News of April 1) chronicle the death at the Coromandel Hospital, from typhoid, of Charles Dempster; at the early age of 25 years. Deceased came to Coromandel a little over two years ago, and was then a member of the police force. Latterly, however, he has followed the occupation of mining. "Charlie" Dempster was a man of genial disposition, and made friends with all with whom he came in contact. He was deservedly popular, and the regret at his early death is widespread. Much sympathy is felt for the young wife of deceased, the pair having been married but six months. The brother and sister of deceased arrived from Waikouaiti (Otago) yesterday, only to learn of his death upon landing. A lead-lined coffin was prepared by Mr S. Merrick, and the remains moved to the wharf at 11 o'clock this morning for shipment to Dunedin. A large number attended the funeral, the Oddfellows, of which deceased was a member, rolling up strongly. -Otago Daily Times, 26/4/1898.
