John Stoddart, (1870-28/2/1895). "set it down on a log"

 OWAKA.

March 4. — A very sad accident occurred at Tahatika on Thursday evening. Mr John Stoddart, aged 25, went out about 6.30 to shoot a rabbit for his dogs. He did not return, and after anxiously waiting for a while, search was instituted, and his body was found about 3 in the morning. It appears that he had been carrying a loaded gun, and had set it down on a log rather forcibly, with the result that the gun went off and blew out his brains. The log was about 6ft from the ground. His body was resting on it in a sitting posture. The deceased was highly respected by all who knew him, and was regarded as a young man of great promise. He had built a nice little house, and was intending to get married. Deep sympathy is felt, both for the young lady so suddenly deprived of her sweetheart and for Mrs Stoddart, who lost her husband in August last and has now been bereaved of a son. The brothers and sister will also feel the blow keenly. The funeral took place on Sunday, and was one of the largest which has ever been held in the district. The services in the house and at the grave were conducted by the Rev. W. G. McLaren.  -Otago Witness, 7/3/1895.
