William Olson was a wharf labourer, married but childless, when he enlisted in January, 1915. As an older man, he was sent to Samoa with the force which relieved that which had successfully invaded the first German territory of the Great War. He was discharged for medical reasons (tuberculosis) in April, 1916, and underwent treatment at Pleasant Point sanatorium near Palmerston.
Personal
Mr William Olson, a well-known athlete of a few years back, passed away at his residence, Bay View road, yesterday, at the early age of 43 years. Mr Olson was a member of the old Caversham Football Club, and later of the Southern Club, and represented Otago as a forward on several occasions. He was also a prominent oarsman of the Dunedin Boating Club, and was a member of many winning crews. He served his country at Samoa during the war, but developed lung trouble. On his return to Dunedin he was employed as a letter-carrier at the Dunedin Post Office, but had to leave his employment on two occasions to recuperate his health at sanatoriums in the north. About nine days ago he had again to leave his employment, and finally fell a victim to pneumonia. -Otago Daily Times, 3/7/1920.
