58401 Trooper Jackson Greer Mawhinney, 30/5/1897-9/10/1921.

We regret to have to record the death of Mr Jackson G. Mawhinney, eldest son of Mr and Mrs W. M. Mawhinney, Gimmerburn, which took place at his parents' residence on Sunday. He was cut off in his early manhood at the age of 24. It is always sad to see young people taken away, but doubly sad when death is the result of having done their duty to their country. Mr Mawhinney contracted malaria when on active service, which so weakened his constitution that recently tubercular trouble set in. He was a young man of upright character a true type of sterling manhood that would have made a useful citizen. The funeral took place at Ranfurly on Tuesday afternoon and was largely attended, the service being conducted by the Rev. A. D. Kirkland. Genuine sympathy is extended to his bereaved parents and relatives.  -Mt Ida Chronicle, 14/10/1921.

DEATHS

MAWHINNEY. — On October 9, at “Whimilea,” Gimmerburn, Jackson Greer, the beloved eldest son of Wilson M. and Margaret J. Mawhinney; aged 24 years.   -Otago Witness, 18/10/1921.

I have not been able to find a cause of death for Jackson Mawhinney, beyond it being recorded that it was as a result of his military service and a diagnosis of malaria during his time in Egypt.
