William Carson had joined the Army in 1940 but had not been formally enlisted when he boarded the Dunedin train at Ranfurly on June 4, 1943. Only minutes later he died in the wreckage of the train when it left the rails in a cutting to the south of Hyde. He was 23 years old.
The Hyde train crash was New Zealand's worst rail accident, with 17 dead, only eclipsed by the Waitangi disaster ten years later. The driver was found guilty of manslaughter, having driven the train too fast down the track and onto the corner.
