11226 Bombardier Walter Raleigh Barton-Brown, (15/8/1896-6/10/1918). "fatally wounded"


Gunner Walter Raleigh Barton-Browne, recently reported killed in action, was the oldest son of Mrs M. A. Barton-Browne. 213 High street, Dunedin. He enlisted in Dunedin with the llth Reinforcements, and sailed from Wellington in D. Company, Otago Infantry, with the 12th Reinforcements. After spending some time in Egypt he went to France, and was transferred to a trench mortar battery, and had come safely through all the big engagements until he was fatally wounded on October 6. He was educated at the Macandrow Road School, and after leaving school he spent three years on the Minaret Station with his uncle, the late Mr William Waldron. After his uncle's death, he returned to Dunedin. and went to work with the firm of Messrs Murray, Roberts and Co., Crawford street, in whose employ he was at the time of enlistment. His only brother, Humphrey Gilbert Barton-Browne, left with the 16th Reinforcements, and is still in France.  -Evening Star, 18/11/1918.
