MR ROBERT ROBERTSON
BY the death of Mr Robert Robertson Port Chalmers has lost another link with shipping of some years ago. Mr Robertson was a sailmaker on square riggers, his last deepwaterman being the barque May Queen, which was lost at Ripa Island, Lyttelton harbour, nearly 50 years ago. Joining the Union Company’s staff at Port Chalmers, he worked in the company's sail loft on the notorious Don Juan, which was then a hulk, berthed at the cross wharf. When Mr John Knowles, who was then chief sailmaker, retired, Mr Robertson took his place, and remained in charge until he retired a few years ago. On his birthday three months ago Mrs Robertson died suddenly when getting things in readiness for a family birthday party. -Evening Star, 6/9/1938.
