8/1036 Private Gilbert William Crossan, (1889-10/6/1915). "dear 'Gib'"

 
Private Gilbert William Crossan, died of wounds, was the fourth surviving son of Mrs W. Crossan, of Roslyn. He was twenty-six years of age, and was born at Roxburgh, and educated at the Coal Creek and Catlins River Schools. After being at Catlins River for some time, he returned to Roxburgh, and joined the Government railways. Later on he left this employment and took up blacksmithing. He was working at Burnside when the Expeditionary Force was called for, and he immediately joined the Otago Battalion. Private Crossan was a playing member of the Kaikorai Football Club. Mrs Crossan has another son, Donald, serving with the Fourth Reinforcements.  -Lyttelton Times, 23/6/1915.
