James Keenan, (1824-10/3/1866). "wanted...for filling swamp"

James Keenan was in Dunedin by the end of 1861 - possibly drawn to the town by news of the gold being found three days' walk from it in Gabriels Gully. He is recorded as holding a wholesale liquor license for premises in High st at the end of that year.  In April 1862 comes the first of a number of cases in which James has to go to court to be paid for his goods - in this case, a dishonoured cheque for L18.

We are sorry to have to record the death of Mr James Keenan, one of the oldest tradesmen of the city, who expired after an illness of very short duration. His funeral takes place to-day.   -Otago Daily Times, 12/3/1866.
