LOST FROM SHIP
SEAMAN DISAPPEARS
(Special to the "Evening Post.")
AUCKLAND, This Day,
The disappearance of an able seaman, H. M. Scollay, from the Westport Coal Company's chartered steamer Kairnai after clearing Westport on Tuesday for Auckland was reported on the arrival of the ship here on Saturday morning. Mystery attaches to the loss of the seaman, and no suggestion has been offered as a reason for his disappearance. The Kaimai cleared the Westport bar at 5.15 on Tuesday afternoon, and about an hour later the absence of Mr. Scollay was noticed. A thorough search of the ship was made without result, and the Kaimai was put about to steer over her outward course. She continued inshore towards the bar, but no sign was found, gathering darkness hampering the search. -Evening Post, 6/3/1939.
ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS
DROWNED SEAMAN.
The body of Herbert Scollay, aged about 35 years, a single man, who was missed from s.s. Kaimai, the Westport Coal Company’s vessel, on February 28 shortly after the vessel left Westport for Auckland, was recovered yesterday morning washed up on the beach at Cape Foulwind, about seven miles south of Westport, by a fisherman, Mr H. Sutherland. The body was identified by a seaman of the Kaimai, which was in port in the afternoon, only by the clothes which the deceased wore. -Evening Star, 13/3/1939.
A verdict that Herbert Andrew Scollay was found drowned, there being no evidence to show how or by what means he came to be in the sea, was returned by the Coroner (Mr G. Taylor) at the inquest held at Westport yesterday. Deceased was a seaman on the steamer Kaimai. -Hokitika Guardian, 14/3/1939.
