PERSONAL ITEMS.

Private Murdo McKenzie (youngest son of Mrs McKenzie and the late Mr Finlay McKenzie, of Dunrobin), was reported killed in action in France last week. The late Private McKenzie, who was 29 years of age, was born and educated at Dunrobin. He worked at home until he acquired a 600-acre farm hear the Dunrobin School, and was a capable farmer. Enlisting with the 15th Reinforcements, he had seen considerable service, being in France all the time. He had just returned to the front after being on his first leave when he met his death. Two Brothers are on active service — viz., Alex., who went with the 20th Reinforcements, and David, who owns a large farm in Queensland, and enlisted with the Australian Forces soon after the war broke out.  -Mataura Ensign, 17/1/1918.

Murdo McKenzie enlisted with the Otago Infantry Regiment in 1916.  As sown above, he went through some of the hardest times of the Otagos, to be killed in a quiet time after the Battle of Passchendaele.  The Otagos' Official History has little to sa about the day he died, except that "On the 22nd abnormal movement in the vicinity of Gheluvelt was dispersed by artillery fire"

Murdo McKenzie lies somewhere in Belgian soil, buried near the support line of the Otagos.  He is remembered on the Polygon Wood Memorial at Zonnebecke, Belgium, at at Crookston Cemetery.
