May Glover Newson, 1904-3/10/1916.

 CASUALTIES.

A distressing fatality occurred at. Wairuna on the 3rd Inst., as a result of which a girl named Mary Glover Newson, aged 12 years, lost her life. The girl, who was a daughter of Mr J. B. Newson, left shortly before 6 o'clock to bring in the cows. She was riding a horse which had the saddle fixed over the cover. Some time later the horse came home riderless and without the saddle. A search was made, and the girl's body was found. A doctor from Balclutha found that her neck had been broken. An inquest was held on the 4th inst., before Mr H. A. Young (coroner), and a verdict in accordance with the medical testimony was returned.  -Otago Witness, 11/10/1916.

THE WAIRUNA FATALITY.

Quite a sensation of grief passed through our district on Wednesday October 4 (writes a Wairuna correspondent) when it became known that little May Newson had met with a fatal accident the night before. She had always been so bright and happy that it was hard to realise that her young life had been cut off so suddenly, and then our thoughts turned in the deepest sympathy to the stricken parents and sisters. Neighbours went along and did their best to help to sustain the sorrowing ones, all mourning as if the little one had been their own. The funeral which was a very large one took place on Friday afternoon last, Rev S. Mason conducting the services both at the house and at the graveside. At the graveside the children's beautiful hymn ''Around the Throne of God in Heaven" was sung. After the interment some beautiful wreaths were placed on the grave, one being a glasscovered one from her teachers and schoolmates. At the church service on Sunday Mr Mason preached a very comforting address from the text, ''Let not your hearts be troubled," and gave us the thought that although the bud had been plucked, it was simply that it might be able to expand and grow beautiful away from the cares and storms of life. And so we leave her knowing how much happier she is, and full of the certain hope that we shall one day meet her where all will be happiness and joy and where all earth's cares and trials will be fully explained to us.  -Clutha Leader, 13/10/1916.
