MOTOR CYCLE FATALITY.
On Saturday evening last shortly after seven o'clock, a young man named Thomas Hendry, 25 years of age, was seriously injured through being thrown from his motor cycle on the main road about three miles on the Beaumont side of Millers Flat. He died at Mr L. McDonald's at 9.15 the same night.
At the inquest held at Mr McDonald's on Monday morning, before Mr L. Faigan, J.P., and a jury of four, it appeared that the deceased came from Glasgow about 2 1/2 years ago. He left Dunedin about 2.30 p.m. on Saturday for Queenstown. At Raes Junction he passed Mr K. Walmsley of Outram, who was driving in the same direction, and he was found on the road five miles farther on by Mr Walmsley. Thomas Jones, who was driving in the opposite direction, also came upon the body lying on the road, and they removed the unfortunate man, who was unconscious, to the side of the road and then rang up the police and doctor who arrived shortly after.
Dr J. K. Gilmour and Constable McMahon on arrival shifted the young man to Mr McDonald's, where he died at 9.45 the same evening. They then inspected the road and found that the cycle had skidded for about 32yds from where the body was found. The road was in good order with loose sand at side of wheel tracks and it appeared as if the cycle had skidded and the rider thrown on to his head, receiving a fractured skull.
The jury's verdict was that deceased met his death as a result of being thrown from his cycle owing to the machine getting out of control, and there was no evidence of any obstruction or interference by other traffic to have caused the accident.
The deceased was buried in the Millers Flat Cemetery on Monday, at mid-day. He had no relatives in New Zealand and Mr R. Ramsay, of Dunedin, his late employer, was present at the inquest for identification purposes, and also attended the deceased's funeral. -Mt Benger Mail, 30/1/1929.
