Henry Avery, (?)-23/12/1923.

TWO PEOPLE BURNED.

DISTRESSING FATALITY.

OVERTAKEN BY GRASS FIRE.

Per Press Association. NELSON, Decemoer 24. A distressing occurrence is reported from Rockville, near Collingwood, whereby two elderly people, Mrs Mary Ann Gill, and her brother, Henry Cisley John Avery, both over sixty years of age, lost their lives. Mrs Gill kept house for her brother. Yesterday afternoon they went for a walk. Avery lit a scrub fire in rough country in two or three places, and the fire burned fiercely. Both attempted to clamber up a steep gully, but were overtaken. Mrs Gill was burnt to death on the spur. Avery was found with his clothes all burned off. He was taken home and died at 1.30 this morning. The tragedy occurred in a most secluded spot, and it was only a coincidence that the tragedy was discovered so soon.  -Star, 24/12/1923.
