Leslie George Gibbs, 1903-28/4/1917.

 SHOOTING FATALITY

A BOY KILLED.

A sad shooting fatality occurred at Timitanga, Flat Creek, on Saturday afternoon. Leslie George Gibbs, aged 14, son of Mr Archibald Gibbs, (formerly employed by Robertson Bros, in Nelson), was out shooting, when he was accidentally shot by his mate, a bullet penetrating his heart. The body was brought to Nelson to-day for burial.

From particulars of the fatality gathered this afternoon it appears that the lad Gibbs was out with another lad, George Pearce, aged 13, the latter having recently arrived from the North island. The boys left Mr Gibbs's house in the afternoon, having a pea rifle, intending to shoot birds. Gibbs asked Pearce to hold the rifle while he had a drink, and was stooping down to drink when shot. Pearce states that the rifle slipped and his finger touched the trigger, the bullet entering Gibbs's ribs and penetrating to the heart. The accident occurred about 500 yards from Mr Gibbs's house, and Mr Gibbs was quickly on ihe scene, but nothing could be done for the deceased, who, after being shot, had got up and staggered a yard or two.

Much sympathy will be expressed for Mr and Mrs Gibbs in the loss of there son in such painful circumstances.  -Nelson Evening Mail, 30/4/1917.
